Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 Should Have Batman: Arkham’s Dual Play

The sequel to Respawn Entertainment’s 2019 hit game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, should utilize characters like Merrin and Cere Junda in gameplay, and the Dual Play system found in Batman: Arkham Knight shows how it could be done. This mechanic allowed Batman to switch with any of his allies in combat to perform special skills, or use character-specific abilities. Players in the first entry to the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order series controlled the young Padawan, Cal Kestis, along with his droid companion BD-1, during fights. Employing the unique Dual Play mechanic in the sequel could make combat more dynamic, as it would allow Fallen Order‘s supporting cast to have a more influential role during gameplay.

Players are initially introduced to Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order after he is forced into hiding, following the events of the Jedi Purge seen in Revenge of the Sith. He meets the force-sensitive woman, Cere Junda, early on in his adventure and later allies with the former Dathomirian Nightsister, Merrin. Cal vows to help rebuild the Jedi Order, while also fighting off the Galactic Empire. In the final mission, the Padawan comes face-to-face with Darth Vader and, with the help of Cere, narrowly escapes his demise. Dual Play would add a new element to combat in Fallen Order‘s sequel, allowing players to switch between Kestis and his allies as they fight stronger foes together.

Rocksteady’s Dual Play system in Batman: Arkham Knight enabled players to switch between Batman and his allies. Active combos were carried over when changing characters, enabling players to continue building up their combo meter. The AI would also continue to use any special move, allowing the player to input a technique and seamlessly switch to a different hero, such as Batman: Arkham Knight‘s Batgirl. Once the Dual Play meter was full, players could execute a takedown to immediately eliminate a foe. While this system was only available in specific areas, the mechanic allowed for more complex combat and additional enemies in each fight of the game.

The ending of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order opens up the opportunity for players to control Cal Kestis and his allies together in combat, as they are sure to encounter more dangerous threats. In the first game, players fight using just Kestis, with minor support from BD-1. Dual Play could enable more enemies to be put into each combat encounter as Kestis’ allies would help in a fight. Jedi: Fallen Order had an extensive skill tree, and the ability to use other characters would be a great way to introduce new techniques.

By using the instant takedown from filling the Dual Play meter in Batman: Arkham Knight, players could execute a flourish with the lightsabers of two or more Jedi, dispatching foes. It would also enable more opportunities for Merrin to accompany Cal on his adventures, and for players to see more of her Nightsister magic up close. This fun mechanic would be an excellent addition to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order‘s sequel, as it would help make Cal’s allies feel more directly involved in combat encounters.
