Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is one of the most beloved characters in the MCU, and in Thor: Love And Thunder, he can earn the nickname other than “Fat Thor” given to him in Avengers: Endgame. Thor’s appearance controversially changed in Endgame, where his depression is depicted as him becoming overweight and alcoholic. Thanks to his new look, some MCU fans labeled the superhero “Fat Thor,” but his real nickname is less well known.
Nicknames are not new in the MCU, with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) famously giving his Avenger teammates several nicknames over the years. In The Avengers, he called Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) “Legolas” after the Lord Of The Rings archer and named Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) “Capsicle” in reference to the 70 years Captain America spent cryogenically frozen. Thor wasn’t safe from the name-calling either. In reference to Thor’s new appearance in Endgame, Stark dubbed the God of Thunder “Lebowski” after Jeff Bridges’ similar-looking character. But neither Fat Thor nor Lebowski are the Asgardian’s actual MCU nickname.
“Bro Thor” is Thor’s official nickname used for MCU merchandise, and in Love And Thunder, he can earn that name thanks to his makeover. The trailer for Taika Waititi’s latest movie shows Thor with braided, wavy hair and a refreshed wardrobe, which suggests he is morphing more into what a stereotypical “bro” looks like. Thor’s appearance is edging towards the archetypal Californian surfer bro, a comparison he has received before. In The Avengers, Tony Stark called Thor “Point Break” due to his long blonde locks that reminded the founding Avengers member of Patrick Swayze in the film of the same name. A decade later, Thor’s presentation in Love And Thunder looks set to push him further into bro culture.
The cool factor of teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy will also help Chris Hemsworth’s character earn the “Bro Thor” moniker. Although the Thor: Love And Thunder trailer suggests that he won’t stick around with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and the crew for long, having Thor spend time with the Guardians will give him a chance to have silly, jockish moments that are typical of a bro. The cool factor of the Guardians and Thor’s quest to find his inner Zen also fits with the character’s development.
Thor has arguably gone through more than any other MCU character, with the deaths of his friends and family, particularly Loki, weighing heavily on his mind. But despite the hardships that Thor has endured, his personality still shines through, and having him evolve into a fully-fledged bro will allow Thor’s trademark humor, which Hemsworth delivers so well, to come to the surface. Thor: Love And Thunder should be the end of the “Fat Thor” nickname as the Asgardian God earns the title of “Bro Thor.”
