Unveiling Tomorrow: Kelly Grace Thomas Reveals Shocking Secrets Behind Future Tense

Renée Reese: Why did you choose memoir-in-verse to tell this story? What about poetry in particular lends itself to the story you’re telling here?
Kelly Grace Thomas: I wrote these poems in the middle of the storm, as a life raft — something to cling to so I could survive. I never expected anyone to read them. I definitely didn’t expect them to become a collection. So much of my mom’s cancer and my infertility was shrouded in silence. She didn’t want people to feel sorry for her, so she kept her illness secret. Every time I shared my fertility struggles, well-meaning people would tell me all the things they thought I was doing wrong, or how easy it had been for them. I was trying so hard to survive that I don’t think I processed what was happening while it was happening. I could only process moments, feelings. I couldn’t see the beginning or the end of the story because I was so lost inside it. I couldn’t make sense of it, so I made poetry. I was trying to find something beautiful inside the ache.
