Bridgerton Season 2 Star Teases Steamy Penelope & Colin Scenes

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has teased details about the developing romance between her character Penelope and Colin (Luke Newton). Season 2 of the hit period drama is set to premiere on Netflix on March 25 with eight episodes. Bridgerton is produced by Shonda Rhimes, creator of long-running hits like Grey’s Anatomy and the recent Scandal, and the founder of the production company Shondaland.

Bridgerton, based on a series of novels by Julia Quinn, follows the titular Bridgerton family through London’s social season in the competitive Regency Era, where debutantes are presented at court for arranged marriages. The series boasts a diverse cast, presented as an alternate version of history in which England is racially integrated and people of color are granted titles by the sovereign. Bridgerton season 2 is expected to adapt the second book in the series, “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” and focus on a new romance for Anthony, after season 1 centred on Daphne and the Duke of Hastings.

In an interview with ET Canada, Coughlan talked about how the show’s success has changed her life, after Bridgerton became the most-watched series on Netflix (later overtaken by Squid Game). The actor likened the effects of fame to being an animal in a zoo, with all the looks she receives while in public. Coughlan also talked about the onscreen romance between her and Newton’s character, and how the Bridgerton cast used to joke about it before it happened in the script. Read Coughlan’s quote below:

“Oh God, yes, it’s going to happen! We used to joke about it, really inappropriate jokes, like, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if we did this when we do it?’ And then as time goes on it becomes more real. Now it’s not funny anymore! Everyone’s like, ‘You’re going to have to kiss Luke! On the lips!’”

Showrunner Chris Van Dusen has already announced that Bridgerton series has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4, which will allow the storylines like Penelope and Colin’s to be plotted more in advance going forward. Bridgerton season 2 won’t see the return of fan-favorite Simon, the Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page. This has proved a huge disappointment to fans of the show, as the actor received an Emmy nomination for his work in season 1, and Bridgerton itself received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in 2021.

To hear Coughlan tease a romantic story for Penelope and Colin so definitively will no doubt come as a big surprise to fans of the show. Bridgerton season 1 saw Penelope heartbroken over the fact that Colin had fallen for Marina. When Penelope finally had a chance to confess her love for him after Marina had left the picture, however, Colin disappointed Penelope once again by revealing he was going away. Given this is where fans last saw the pair, it’s uncertain how the scenes Coughlan mentioned will come to fruition, and whether they will indeed happen in Bridgerton season 2, or the already confirmed later episodes. Nonetheless, a Penelope and Colin pairing is something fans have long been waiting for, so Coughlan’s latest Bridgerton update is likely to ensure season 2 sees a very warm welcome when it debuts in March.
