Did Blade Secretly Appear In The Doctor Strange 2 Trailer?

The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer included several surprising characters, and fans even think they’ve spotted Blade. The new trailer for Doctor Strange 2 premiered during Super Bowl LVI, and it immediately shook up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) seemingly confronts Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) about her sinister turn, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) shows off her powers in several new scenes, and Ultron bots apparently escort Doctor Strange to a trial. The trial scene appears to introduce Marvel’s Illuminati, which consists of a powerful group of characters working behind the scenes, and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X seems to be among the group.

Marvel announced Mahershala Ali would play Blade at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con. Since then, director Bassam Tariq has signed on to helm the upcoming project, which gets a script from HBO’s Watchmen writer Stacy Osei-Kuffour. Though Ali’s Blade film is still a long way away, the actor has already debuted as the half-human and half-vampire daywalker in the MCU. Ali makes a voice cameo in an Eternals post-credit scene, warning Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman before the character touches the Ebony Blade.

Some fans believe they’ve spotted Blade in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, and it all comes down to Stephen Strange’s trial. The trial scene seems to introduce Marvel’s Illuminati, which includes Patrick Stewart’s Professor X. However, other members of the mysterious group appear slightly obstructed from view in the background. Several viewers (via Twitter) noticed one character seems to have a sword in the scene, possibly hinting that Blade will make an appearance. After all, Blade is the MCU’s resident sword-wielding daywalker.

Now that Blade has already made his MCU debut, Marvel could bring him in at any time, and a sword is a significant indicator. Interestingly, Blade wasn’t an original member of Marvel’s Illuminati, so putting him on a potential Illuminati council would be an exciting development for the MCU. But the Illuminati hasn’t been confirmed for Doctor Strange 2, so a possible Blade cameo could even reveal he’s part of another group, such as the Midnight Sons. Additionally, with the Multiverse at the center of Doctor Strange 2, Mahershala Ali may not even be the Blade appearing in the film. Instead, Wesley Snipes’ version of the character could show up.

Ultimately, details are difficult to see in the scene, so the character could be anyone. Namor, a character teased multiple times in the MCU, is an original member of the Illuminati, so the sword-like weapon could be the character’s trident. Other Illuminati members include Iron Man, Black Bolt, and Mister Fantastic, so the scene has several possibilities. The character also may have long hair, leaving Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo as an option. After all, Mordo appears elsewhere in the trailer with long hair. With so many possibilities for the character, it’s clear the movie is called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for a reason.
