Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Needs More Varied Suit Powers

There are a lot of suit powers in Marvel’s Spider-Man, but most of them are combat-related, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could benefit from diversifying them with new costumes. A lot of the suit powers given to Peter and Miles in both Marvel’s Spider-Man games overlap or are very similar, like releasing a wave of negative energy, webbing up every enemy nearby, or blasting enemies with a sound wave. Each of these powers temporarily incapacitates enemies in slightly different ways, but they’re essentially the same ability. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can take the suit powers a step further and give players more varied abilities.

Instead of focusing solely on combat, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can give players powers that enhance other areas of the game with varied web-swinging, crawling, or even the ability to glide around the city. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should still have combat-based suit powers, but they should be more diverse. Different versions of Spider-Man have a lot of abilities throughout the comics that the new game can explore with different suit powers.

There are some suits in Marvel’s Spider-Man that don’t have any powers, so unlocking them is less rewarding. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could give each suit a power, even if it’s something comical like the ability to insult enemies that players obtained after unlocking the Vintage Comic Book Suit in Marvel’s Spider-Man. However, the novelty suit powers should be secondary to a new group of diverse suits and abilities in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Having the Web Wings Suit in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would enhance exploration and traversal, as it would give players a glide power that enhances the way they travel across the city. Being able to activate a glide function can also help players complete challenges more easily in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. In the first game, players could over-swing and miss a target, then have to backtrack, but gliding would allow for more precise landings. This would cut down on time if players have challenges with time limits similar to the Taskmaster Challenges in Marvel’s Spider-Man.

A Web Wings suit could also change combat encounters. In Marvel’s Spider-Man, there were enemies that had jetpacks, and they were sometimes hard to reach. Giving Spider-Man the ability to glide could help players reach enemies easier or change the way they approach combat situations. Being able to glide towards a group of enemies instead of swinging close and dropping in can make it easier to surprise them. Overall, gliding could increase Spider-Man’s maneuverability and combine the first game’s web-slinging mechanics with the gliding gameplay seen in Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham games.

In the comics, the Black Costume was initially a symbiote that gave Spider-Man enhanced abilities like increased strength and speed, sturdier webbing, and the ability to crawl on wet surfaces. A temporary increase in strength and speed could affect multiple mechanics in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, like in Web of Shadows. Greater strength can enhance combat, while increased speed can allow Spider-Man to zip across the city much faster than he was able to in Marvel’s Spider-Man. The suit could also give Spider-Man stronger webbing, which could affect how players fight Brutes. Instead of shooting multiple webs, using the symbiote power could allow players to web up Brutes with a single shot in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

There is also a version of the Black Costume that wasn’t symbiote-created, so Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could include either or both versions of the suit. The non-symbiote version could have its own unique powers, like increased stealth. There were two stealth powers in Marvel’s Spider-Man that kept enemies from calling for backup or distorted the vision of non-alerted enemies. The non-symbiote Black Costume could take Spider-Man’s stealth a step further by allowing him to regain stealth after enemies are alerted or decrease the chances of alerting enemies in close proximity. The Black Costume can give Peter Parker a similar ability to Miles Morales’ camouflage.

In many versions of Spider-Man, including live-action, comics, and animated series, there have been multiverse themes where Peter Parker encounters other versions of himself. A multiverse suit power could temporarily bring in another Spider-Man to fight with in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This could take the suit power from the first game that spawned decoys a step further. A temporary alternate Spider-Man from the Spider-Verse in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 could be a distraction in stealth missions or help players win difficult combat encounters by having another Spider-Man fight alongside them.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man, players could unlock every MK Armor suit, but the Spider Armor MKI was part of The City that Never Sleeps DLC and didn’t have a suit power. The other Spider Armor MK suits had shield abilities like protection against bullets or absorbing all damage for a short period of time. The Advanced Suit also allowed Spider-Man to constantly generate Focus, which players could use to heal, but there weren’t any suits that directly affected health. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should have a suit power that regenerates health for a short time.

Other than the Spider Armor MKI, a health regeneration suit could also be similar to the iconic Advanced Suit from Marvel’s Spider-Man. The Advanced Suit was designed specifically for Marvel’s Spider-Man and the sequel could bring a new suit as well, potentially also created by an incarcerated Otto Octavius. Spider-Man has healing abilities that aren’t reflected in Marvel’s Spider-Man, so including a suit that regenerates health can lean on this ability, and provide more ways for players to reenter combat after taking damage.

Regardless of which suit allows it, players need a way to swing faster in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The first game allowed players to build momentum by diving in between swings, but that momentum was easily lost, and swinging slowly between far waypoints or using fast travel points with slow loading times took away from the urgency of the game, especially in later missions. Having a suit power that increases swing speed will greatly enhance the playability of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, even if it’s presented as a suit power with a temporary effect.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man, players were able to unlock the Iron Spider Suit, which gave them four mechanical arms to fight with. However, Spider-Man also had a series of comics where he grew four additional arms in an attempt to get rid of his powers. Instead of simply giving Peter more arms to fight with (which Marvel’s Spider-Man‘s Iron Man-made suit already does), a Six Arm Suit could increase crawl speed or give Spider-Man the ability to swing from webs using all six arms in synchronization.

The other iteration of Spider-Man with extra appendages is the Man-Spider version, which could have its own set of unique abilities. Crawling around the city as an actual spider can be fun regardless of the suit power, but adding some of Man-Spider’s unique abilities can completely change the way the game is played. Man-Spider had greatly increased strength, but having enhanced strength as a suit power for Man-Spider would be fitting, as many of Spider-Man’s costumes in Marvel’s Spider-Man already increase strength. Instead, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 should include one of Man-Spider’s other abilities like spitting venom or shooting webs from every limb.

Although a lesser-known Peter Parker, Wolf Spider had some interesting powers that could be fun to use in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Wolf Spider was actually a villainous version of Peter Parker that gained the ability to shoot energy blasts and drain the life of his opponents when he was empowered by the Siege Perilous. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, activating the suit power can give players the ability to drain health from their enemies or shoot energy blasts that incapacitate them.

There are numerous possibilities for suit powers in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and including some of the more obscure Spider-Man abilities can make the game much more interesting. Suit powers should enhance every aspect of the game instead of just focusing on combat powers. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has the opportunity to give players a variety of suit powers to choose from, and some unique powers that can keep the game interesting through multiple playthroughs.
