Why Embracing Frivolity Might Be the Most Serious Act of All: A Provocative Take by Jehanne Dubrow
For us, one of the pleasures of reading Dubrow is in witnessing Frivolity’s accruing momentum, its intellectual and aesthetic velocity. I found myself lured into rereading passages, even as the current of her prose pulled me along with the volition of a page-turning novel. For instance, Dubrow’s agile pivot from Austen to fashion is equally cerebral and personal. Dubrow announces that, emerging from lockdown, she has no idea what to wear. She writes, “Clothing has always been a way for me to announce myself,” and while there may be something frivolous about that statement, it also speaks to our shared struggle to reintegrate into society that felt both familiar and foreign after months of isolation.
