Scott: That literally did happen to him.
Greg: Yep. Riverdance was originally meant to be nothing more than the interval number at Eurovision Song Contest in 1994. But it got such a spectacular response that the producer, Moya Doherty, was like, “We need to make this a full show.”
Scott: He’s a complex character. You mentioned where his grandmother tells him someday he’ll be a king. He carries that sense of destiny with him, his identification with a place in Irish history.
Greg: Well, Michael Flatley was raised in Chicago, but he was very proud of his Irish heritage. Both his parents were Irish and his grandmother, Hannah, who we see at the beginning was a very good dancer. And at the time the story starts in 1994, it was right before something called the Celtic Tiger, which was a giant economic boom in Ireland. So, at the beginning of the story it’s a difficult time for Ireland, and Flatley took it upon himself to try to basically liberate Ireland as the country’s self-appointed king.
