Inside Greg Wayne's Creative Mind: Secrets Behind His Most Captivating Stories Revealed

Scott: So, if you’re writing an original story, what is your process like when you break story, your prep process?

Greg: I start small then go big. Start with trying to get the premise down in a clear sentence or two – and if it turns out to be a compelling logline, even better. Then I’ll go to a three page outline that covers the key story beats. I had a professor at AFI named Karen Janszen and she taught us a structure called the nine big beats. Basically, the main story beats that need to happen over the course of the screenplay – normal world, inciting incident, the decision that propels you into act two, and so on. Any kind of model like that is really helpful.
