Greg: Jean was a really fun character. You have these two lead dancers in Riverdance, Michael and Jean, and it’s hard to overstate how important these two were to Riverdance fans. Especially in Ireland, they were all over the tabloids, there was so much interest. Are they sleeping together? Are they feuding?
Jean was very young when she was recruited to join Riverdance – 22 years old – and she was studying theatre at Hofstra. She’d grown up doing Irish dance and really wanted to leave it behind her, but she’s an absolutely incredible dancer. In the script, she’s actually better than Michael – which is extremely threatening to him. And when the whole idea of a show and a tour comes up, she barely even wants to do it. As they put the show together, she seems to be getting preferential treatment from Moya and she’s more beloved by the fans – and it drives Michael crazy. So, you have Jean, this antagonist, who is a massively talented dancer, she’s beautiful, she’s getting all the attention, and she doesn’t even care. Aside from the dancing talent, she’s the polar opposite of Michael, and her presence in the show is his worst nightmare.
