Greg: A couple things, mainly. In the broad sense, I’ll start an Apple Notes document on my phone and just write down everything about the characters that occurs to me randomly throughout the day – and anything related to the project in general. Then I’ll take some time to put those thoughts in a more organized Word document.
But something that can really help, especially if you’re a bit stuck, is to write by hand. Just open a notebook and say, “I’m going to write for five minutes about this character.” It can be pretty surprising how much you can come up with just writing stream-of-consciousness. And then you can highlight the stuff you want to keep and transfer that to the Word doc as well. It’s important to keep things organized so you’re not constantly referencing multiple documents as you go through the process of writing the thing.
